Coming On-Campus?
This is the right place for you! We believe that God has something very special prepared for you this semester and we want to help you prepare for this new transitional period in your life. Both your Resident Directors (RD) and I have been working very hard to organize an awesome chapel and dormitory schedule for you.
I recently read an article titled “Trading Spaces: A Packing List of Essential Stuff for Your Dorm Room” by Eli Clark, and Ruth McClelland-Nugent, and I wanted to share some important elements with you in the following paragraphs so that we can help you better prepare for the upcoming year.
Many families know some of the usual items that a college student should bring, but it’s hard to think of everything. Of course, personal items from home will aid in the transition, but you’ll need more than photos and a teddy bear to get through the year.
Before you buy or pack anything, be sure to check our school’s student manual page (pages 33-38) about what items are and are not allowed.
Also, consider talking to your Resident Director (RD) about what to pack. They can tell you about the “don’t bother” and “must-haves” for the residences here at LABI. They may even know specifics about your building that will be a real help. This semester your Men’s RD is Steve Servin (Room 102) and your Woman’s RD is Tracy Ortiz (Room 103). They can be contacted through my office from 8am to 5pm Monday thru Friday starting August 20th at 626-968-1328. Once you arrive on campus, you could be locked into a living situation you do not care for simply because of a few errors.
In the meantime, here’s a list to help you start planning your move.
Bed and Bedding
-Sheets. Your bed will be a regular twin mattress.
-Comforter and/or quilts, blankets, etc. Consider bringing sturdy, easy-to-wash items.
-Alarm clock.
-Extra pillow(s) if you will lounge/study on the bed.
Health and Grooming
-Shower shoes, you will be sharing a shower.
-All necessary toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and all grooming/cosmetic) items. We expect a full house this year. You will be sharing your room with at least two or three other students. Since space will be cramped, consider buying smaller sizes, at least at first.
-Shower bucket/basket/caddy to carry items.
-Towels: bath, washcloths and hand towels. Consider marking your name on a tag in permanent marker, especially if you have plain white or other “anonymous” towels.
-Women who wear makeup might want a portable makeup kit/box, since it may not be feasible to store cosmetics near where the mirror is.
-Bathrobe. Especially important because the shower is down the hall.
-Prescription medicines and copies of the prescriptions.
-First Aid kit, including basic adhesive bandages, disinfectant, aspirin, etc. This will cut down on trips to the health center.
Clothes and Laundry
-Clothes. Your space will be limited to three drawers (18’x 21’), so only bring what you think you will wear. You can always bring more back to school after your first trip home.
-Weather-appropriate outer clothes. You will probably be walking to class; be sure your coat or jacket is right for the climate. Review our dress code in our Student Manual pages 25-27. Our chapel attire is “business casual”.
-Sewing kit, including black and white thread, scissors, and needles. If you don’t know how to sew on a button, now is the time to learn.
-Laundry basket and/or bag.
-Laundry detergent, dryer sheets, stain remover stick or spray.
-A small coin purse or jar with lid to carry quarters for the machines. See page 21 of our student manual for additional info)
-Iron and small ironing board, or a small steamer.
Decor
-Posters. You will probably also be able to buy some of these on campus.
-Sticky wall mounts and removable adhesive hooks. Our school does not allow you to put nails in the walls, so you will need other ways to hang your décor.
-Personal pictures, photos, and other favorite items. Avoid heavy frames, since you may not be able to hang them.
-Curtains and spring rod, if you like. Some people like this touch in their room.
Study Stuff
-A sturdy backpack or book bag for everyday use
-Computer and any necessary supplies/accessories. We provide wireless internet in your dorm rooms.
-School supplies, including a calendar or planner as well as basic pens, paper, pencils, notebooks.
-Dry-erase board and marker. You’ll want this so people can leave you messages.
-A small extra bookshelf.
Furnishings
-Other storage or organization units. A few stacking plastic crates will come in handy.
-We will provide one folding chairs for cheap extra seating. Or consider a bean bag chair or other soft, portable furniture.
-We will provide one trash can per room, you will need more. Bring your own trashcan and trash bags.
-Lamps. We have special fire-safety rules about the size and power of lamps that are allowed, so make sure your lamps are within regulations.
-Cleaning supplies. You are in charge of your own room cleaning.
-We have carpet; consider bringing a small, light vacuum. Your floor will get pretty disgusting without it! The school only provides one vacuum per floor and it seems to always be occupied. Your own vacuum is preferred.
-Fan (box or floor). Depending on the climate control in the building, you may want this to adjust to your individual needs.
Electronics and Equipment
-Multiple outlet surge protectors and extension cords. Check out school safety regulations about allowed cords.
-Cell phone if you have one. Your floor will be provided on single phone for incoming calls only. Men’s RD dorm phone number: 626-968-1328 Extension 3008. Woman’s RD dorm phone number: 626-968-1328 Extension 3016.
-TVs and game systems are not allowed.
-Although many students like to have their own things, space and electrical outlets might not allow them to bring everything. (Of course, it is always a good idea to talk with your RD(s) during the summer to help in the transition.)
Food and Snacks
-Small refrigerator. Microwave, hot plate, coffeemaker, etc. Check our student manual as our school has strict safety regulations about these items. There is no communal kitchen available.
-A few unbreakable dishes: plastic cups, microwave-safe bowl, and small plastic food storage tubs.
-Sandwich bags, aluminum foil, and/or plastic wrap. You’ll want to store that extra piece of pizza in the fridge for tomorrow’s breakfast.
-A small bottle of dish soap, scrubber, small dishtowel.
-Snacks: popcorn, chips, sodas, etc. Check about food regulations.
Misc.
-Batteries and flashlight in case of an emergency.
-A small and inexpensive tool kit.
-A large backpack or shoulder bag for possible weekend trips you might take.
-Calling card, unless you have other long-distance arrangements.
-Consider a small plant. No aquarium with fish are allowed.
With that in mind we want to let you know that the theme for this semester is “Never Late; Always on Time” based on Acts 2:17. As you might guess, most of our discussions in chapel this year will focus around the book or Acts.
Continuing this year is the “Room of the Week”. Every Thursday during our chapel service we will be choosing students from the same room who have displayed exemplary behavior and neatness throughout the week. These students will receive a free pass to oxygen.
Our morning schedule has changed. This semester our Morning Devotions will take place at 7:00 am to 7:30 am. Breakfast will begin serving at 7:30 am. This allows more students to take advantage of our morning meal.
My office will always be open to any question or concerns you might have or if you just want to hang out. During the semester I would like to personally set some time apart to meet you and close the door to my office so we can talk about your Studies, Ministry, and Relationships.
In his Grip,
Pastor Steve Pinto
