It gives us great honor and pleasure to announce the launching of the Dr. Grace Morales-Scott Women’s Leadership Institute at LABI College. Dr. Grace has been a role model to thousands, and an example of leadership to LABI men and women for over fifty years! This new institute will be positioned to provide leadership-focused workshops, trainings, and coursework for LABI students and the greater church community. The institute will also provide a new study space for on campus and commuter students. Please plan on joining us on Saturday, Febrary 24th, 2018 at 2:00pm in the LABI chapel to celebrate with Dr. Grace her life achievements and help us in dedicating this new center on campus. Please read about Dr. Grace below.
Born in Fresno and raised in Sanger, California, Dr. Scott’s family were migrant workers who followed the seasonal crops. While working in the grape fields alongside her father, he told his 5 year old daughter to go to school and get a good education. This explains one of the many reasons why Dr. Grace’s commitment to education runs deep. In 1955, at the age of 15 years old, Dr. Grace received Christ into her life and shortly thereafter, was baptized in the Holy Spirit. As a new convert and new student (1958), LABI gave Dr. Grace a solid, theological foundation for spiritual growth and ministry service. She had the privilege of studying under the ministries of the Rev. Theodore Bueno, Dr. Victor DeLeon, Jr., Rev. Esteban Camarillo, Ruth Orozco, Rev. Jovita Bonilla, and Dr. Joel Torres. Dr. Scott’s education at LABI also served as the catalyst to pursue higher education. After obtaining a BA in Psychology and an MA in Counseling from Cal State University, San Bernardino and a Ph.D. in Education from UCLA, she ministered for decades beyond the church and institutional levels.
In 1982, Dr. Grace had just graduated with her MA from Cal State San Bernardino when the President of LABI appointed her to the position of Academic Dean, the first female Academic Dean in the School’s history! There are many “firsts” in terms of her career, service and leadership. Dr. Grace was the first Chairwoman of the Board of LABI College and also served as the founding president of the LABI College Foundation; a separate non-profit to help with scholarship and fund-raising, exclusively for our LABI students. As Mentor, Role Model and an Advocate for education, her students followed her example and have pursued higher education and now work in the fields of Higher Education, Psychology, Law, Social Services, ministry, and missionary work and at LABI College, LATS, and the Southern Pacific District Council of the Assemblies of God.
As a passionate advocate for LABI and for higher education, Dr. Grace was awarded the first ever LABI Alumni Legacy Award in 2011, multiple Presidential Awards of Excellence, and in 2016, the LABI Board of Trustees bestowed upon Dr. Grace its highest level of recognition, the Honorary Doctorate. When asked about Dr. Grace, LABI College President Harris stated, “She is an exemplar alumnus, educator, academic leader and board member, the College owes a tremendous debt of gratitude for her sacrifices, service and investment into LABI College over the last 50 years. It is a privilege to serve with and for Dr. Grace!”
Please save the date Saturday, February 24th, 2018, and join with the LABI family in congratulating the legacy of Dr. Grace Morales Scott in the naming of this new center!
